More about gay cruise in Madrid
Madrid is the gay capital of Spain. No matter where you are in the city, you will find numerous rainbow flags on the balconies and rooftops as well as gay shops and smiling guys and girls. You can enjoy your life here safely and without any judgement.
Years ago, under the Franco dictatorship, to live as an LGBT person was dangerous. One of the most feared places was located in Puerta del Sol: The Directorate General of Security. This is where gays who were considered “socially dangerous” were detained’. Located next door at 13 Carretas street, was the center of gay cruise in Madrid through the end of the dictatorship up until the 90’s: the Carretas cinema. To give you an idea, the Carretas Cinema closed in 1995, and during the last decade before it closed it was the most visited cinema…in all of Spain! So just imagine how crowded those stalls were.
The site has now been taken over by a another place where you play with balls, bingo. If you pass by, give your thanks to the veteran cruisers of Madrid.
